Akrotiri - the 'other side'

Akrotiri village street.

Akrotiri is a less visited gem of Santorini. It has a highly privileged location on 'the other side' of the volcano, that is, the southernmost tip of the island with spectacular views of the caldera.

This tiny village lie surrounding a 14th century Venetian castle and is a peaceful retreat for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of Fira or Oia.

For us personally, Akrotiri is a real favorite. We love its serene atmosphere and beautiful little streets. Not to mention the sunset views!

The area also has a few really good tavernas serving great seafood and other local specialties, such as wild rabbit, pigeon or quail.

Highlights

Akrotiri is the entrance point, via a ten minute walk along a simple path, to Kokkini Paralia, the Red Beach, one of the most amazing Santorini beaches.

From there you can take a 15 min boat ride to reach Aspri Paralia, the white beach.

Akrotiri is also the site for one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the Mediterranean.

Excavations that started in 1967 revealed a rich variety of ancient objects that had been preserved in excellent condition thanks to the protection of volcanic ash layers.

Archaeologists have dated the first settlings of Akrotiri as far back as the 4th millenium BC, with its prime period being the 20th to the 17th century BC when this area was one of the most important communities and ports in the Aegean sea.
