Firostefani - Fira's quiet neighbor
Judging by the map Firostefani appears to be little more than a link between Fira and Imerovigli.
While it is true that the village is indeed more of an extension or a suburb of the Santorini capital, you will soon discover that it does have a character of its own.
Highlights
The village of Firostefani is built entirely along the volcano cliffside, and much unlike Fira, does not really stretch to the other side of the main road running next to the caldera.
This means that to get around here you have to exercise your legs. Chances are that your hotel here will be quite a few steps down the caldera.
The village is densely populated with great Santorini hotels and restaurants, most of which reside at the upper end of the budget scale.
There are a few shops here, most of them situated along one single shopping street and near the village square.
A great church to visit here is Agios Theodori. With its beautiful blue dome and and majestic volcano backdrop it is no wonder that it decorates so many postcards of Greece.
About halfway between Firostefani and Imerovigli you will find the Monastery of St Nicholas.
The elevated position of the church offers unique views of the volcano. For this reason this location is a very popular Santorini wedding location.
Access
You reach Firostefani with a casual 10-15 min walk along the main road north from Fira.
Accommodation
The village has a number of hotels, many of which have privileged positions facing the volcano. This area may not be your best bet if you're looking for cheap Santorini hotels, although there are some in the area facing the inland of the island.
