Pirgos - the medieval village!
Pirgos has about 700 inhabitants and is located inland some 8 km south of Fira.
It is not only the highest but also one of the most interesting of all Santorini villages.
Well, at least if you would be interested in genuinely preserved characteristics of medieval Santorini.
Located on a height, Pirgos was the perfect location for a fortified castle village. During the Venetian rule (1207-1580), this was one of four settlements that were protected from intruders by a wall and a castle. The others were Oia, Emporio and Akrotiri.
Pirgos was the Santorini capital until the early 19th century.
Highlights
The most striking feature of Pirgos is its location, straddling a ridge with both sides offering great views.
At the bottom of the village is where you will find most restaurants and shops. This is also where you have to leave your car and continue your journey up through the village on foot.
On your way up through the labyrinthian streets you can't help but run into some lovely cafés. We personally recommend Oreo Kastelli, a picturesque café with a roof top terrace that offers terrific views of the island.
At the very top lies the castle itself and surrounding it are picturesque stone houses, densely arranged and separated only by very narrow streets.
We think you will enjoy a stroll through this old village. We sure did!
Along your way you will run into many small chapels and churches.
The church of Theotokaki is one of the oldest of the island and dates back to the 10th century. It displays some beautiful wall paintings and religious icons.
Within the confines of the castle there are some nice churches to admire. Agia Triada sits at the very top and houses a very fine display of icons.
Right next to it is the impressive church of Agia Theotokou.
One of the most famous churches of Santorini, the Monastery of Profitis Ilias, while not in the village itself, is only accessible from here.
It sits at the top of mount Profitis Ilias some 4 km from Pirgos. It is possible to drive most of the way there.
Finally, the Easter celebration here is worth a special mention. This is a big event everywhere in Greece, but the ceremony in Pirgos is unique.
On the night of Epitaph (Good Friday), the whole village is lit up by candles and flames, which gives an undeniably magical feel to the whole village.
Access
Pirgos is easily reached by car. Follow the sign at the crossroads near Santo Wines winery located right above Athinios port on the road to Megalochori.
Note, however, that you can't drive into the village. Leave your car as you enter and continue on foot.
The village is also serviced by local buses from Fira, which run on a frequent schedule, especially in summer.
