Santorini Flights - Fly Me To The Volcano!
The undeniably fastest and possibly most convenient way of getting in and out of Santorini is by airplane.
Each season, Santorini flight tickets usually sell out well ahead of the boat tickets, so it may be a good idea to book your Santorini flight well in advance.
The Santorini airport is very small so expect a cramped and hot terminal during the peak season.
On the other hand the terminal building is fairly new and has a certain charm. A nice touch is the upper terrace where you can enjoy the sun, and the planes as they come and go.
The bar that serves food and drinks has a great view of the runway, but you may still feel like you've been had because of the expensive prices. If you are on a budget this is not the place to stop for food and drinks.
A fun fact is that the runway on Santorini is known to be very short so don't be shocked when the pilot slams the breaks after hitting the ground.
Not to worry, though, no accidents have been reported at this airport since its opening.
Santorini airport transfer
The National Santorini Airport (JTR) is situated just outside the village of Kamari on the east side of the island. You can take the bus from the airport to the main city of Fira. Here at the bus station you will easily find bus connections to other villages on the island.
There is a taxi station outside the airport, but you may consider yourself fortunate if you manage to grab a taxi.
It is not unusual that only a few cars show up to accommodate a plane full of passengers.
Your best bet is to arrange for the airport transfer with your hotel. Most hotels on Santorini will send a car or minibus to pick you up if you ask them to.
This request can usually be made at the time of your booking and is often just a little more expensive than taking a taxi.
We have noticed, however, that an increasing number of hotels do not charge anything extra for your hotel transfer. Check beforehand.
