Where the streets have no name!
Have you ever wondered what mysterious place U2 is singing about in their song Where the streets have no name?
Well, maybe, just maybe, that classic song was inspired by the Santorini road network.
Oh, all right, not very likely!
Nevertheless, the fact remains that you will not find any street names on Santorini maps.
In the villages this can be a little tricky if you're trying to find a particular store or restaurant.
There are simple, 'official' Santorini maps circulating online for the larger villages, such as Fira, Oia, Kamari, and Perissa, but as we and many before us have found out, they are not always that helpful. Especially not if it's your first visit.
Asking around is the best approach. People will be more than happy to assist you. This is just how it works here!
Country roads do not have names either, or numbers. They are simply identified by the villages that they connect. For example, Fira-Oia or Fira-Messaria.
It is typical to be given directions such as: "follow the road to Akrotiri, then take a left when crossing with the road towards Pyrgos".
If you're planning to get around the island on your own, then take our advice and spend a few euros on one of the many good fold-out Santorini maps available, for example, from Amazon.com. Well worth it!
Our personal tip for driving is to combine your Santorini map with directions from Google Maps.
